Release date: 17 October 2011

The European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA) is paying tribute today to its president, Holger Bismann, who passed away this weekend after battling with cancer over the last few months.

Holger Bismann, an inspiration
Holger Bismann, an inspiration

As General Manager of Patagonia Europe, many people would not even have realised he was ill, thanks to his steely determination not to let anything slow him down, even managing long bike rides in between bouts of chemotherapy.

Always active ...
Always active ...

Fun-loving and incredibly enthusiastic, Holger never gave up on anything, always reacting to each new challenge with a positive attitude. He had only been president of EOCA since December 2008, yet his boundless energy and drive had taken it from strength to strength, and the association is extremely proud to have worked with him and been supported by him over these last three years.

Holger was an inspiration to us all and he will be very sadly missed.

Further information on Holger's inspiring story can be found here, on Patagonia's website.

"It was a great experience to receive the funding with the support of the people through an exciting voting contest. With the funding we managed to ensure preservation of another 10,000 hectares of wilderness in Küre Mountains National Park in Turkey providing safe haven for endangered species such as wolves and bears. We contributed to saving the last remaining priceless untouched natural areas in Europe so that future generations can also enjoy them."
